Nine Inch Nails, oft abgekürzt als NIN, ist ein amerikanisches Musikprojekt, das 1988 von Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio, gegründet wurde. Es ist nicht als herkömmliche Band zu verstehen, sondern dient ausschließlich der Realisierung von Reznors musikalischen Ideen. Im Studio sind weitere Musiker und Tontechniker lediglich als Assistenten gefragt, da Reznor die meisten Instrumente selbst einspielt. Musikalisch bewegt sich Nine Inch Nails zwischen Rock und elektronischer Musik. Die Band ist bekannt für ihren einzigartigen Stil, der Elemente aus Alternative Rock, Ambient, Electronica und Industrial Rock miteinander verbindet. Trent Reznor ist der Sänger, Keyboarder, Gitarrist, Bassist, Saxophonist und Musikprogrammierer der Band. Seit 2016 ist auch Atticus Ross, ein häufiger Kollaborateur von Reznor, festes Mitglied der Band. Auf Konzertbühnen unterstützen ihn weitere Musiker, wodurch Nine Inch Nails nur in der Live - Umgebung als Band angesehen werden kann. Einige der bemerkenswerten Live - Mitglieder im Laufe der Jahre waren Richard Patrick (Gitarre, 1989 - 1993), Danny Lohner (Bass, Gitarre, Keyboard, 1993 - 2003) und Chris Vrenna (Schlagzeug, Keyboard, 1988 - 1990, 1992 - 1997).
