The Magnetic Fields ist eine US - amerikanische Band, die 1990 von Sänger, Songwriter und Multiinstrumentalist Stephin Merritt in Boston gegründet wurde. Die Band ist nach dem Buch "Les Champs magnétiques" von André Breton benannt. Merritt ist der Haupt - Songwriter, Produzent und Sänger der Band und spielt häufig mehrere Instrumente. Seine Texte handeln oft von Liebe und zeichnen sich durch untypische oder neutrale Geschlechterrollen aus. Sie sind oft ironisch, bitter und humorvoll. Die Band veröffentlichte ihre Debütsingle "100, 000 Fireflies" im Jahr 1991. Die Single war typisch für die frühe Karriere der Band, gekennzeichnet durch synthetisierte Instrumentierung von Merritt, mit Lead - Gesang von Susan Anway (und dann von Stephin Merritt selbst, ab der EP House of Tomorrow). In den folgenden Jahren veröffentlichte die Band eine "No - Synth" - Trilogie: "i" (2004), "Distortion" (2008) und "Realism" (2010). Das neueste Album der Band, "Quickies", wurde am 29. Mai 2020 veröffentlicht. Die Band begann als Merritts Studio - Projekt unter dem Namen "Buffalo Rome". Mit Hilfe seiner Freundin Claudia Gonson, die in Merritts Highschool - Band "The Zinnias" gespielt hatte, wurde eine Live - Band in Boston zusammengestellt, wo Merritt und Gonson lebten.
